As many of you know, I moved the rescue to the undeveloped acre before it was really ready for the birds. It was ok for me…there was a well and electric and even a fence surrounding the entire property. Since July of last year, we have acquired two custom built “bird houses” complete with solar panels for oscillating fans and lighting on the dark days. We do have mobile air conditioners as well, but after talking to a world renowned aviculturist, he said the windows open with the fans blowing and periods of misting the birds would be more natural and better for them in the heat. So, that’s what we’ve been doing.
We are quickly growing out of out two bird houses so will need to get another one sooner rather than later. But, everything takes time and money and being a nonprofit…it takes a little longer. As much as I try to do fundraisers for the third bird house…they bomb. It’s not really even a matter of raising all of the money. The bigger the deposit…the smaller the monthly payments. Donations for something like that are hard to come by…but it is what it is. Well…that’s the next more immediate step in plans.
In the end, I would also like a car port (at least 10×20) to put flight cages under for the wild parrots that come in that can’t be rereleased. I would like to plant trees and make surroundings as close as possible to what they would be used to in the wild.
I would like walking semi covered macaw, Amazon and cockatoo flights where visitors can go in and interact and feed the birds. The visitors would provide enrichment to the birds and the birds would provide entertainment for the visitors.
Right now the property is pretty flat…we planted some trees when we first got here but didn’t really think it through. AND the ground is coral. I would love to have cedar lined walkways through lush foliage surrounding the different bird dwellings.
I know…everything takes time but I’m getting older and who knows how much will get done before I leave. But I have my dream and I won’t give up.
If you’d like to help make my dream a reality…not for me but for the rescues that live here, there are several ways to donate and all donations are tax deductible! We are a 501(c)3 (FEIN 82-1640814).
